Audrey St. John, BS
Certified Medical Massage Practitioner
Medical massage therapy uses
the manual movements and pressures of alternative massage, but the therapists are scientifically formed. They acquire the
hand skills that any massage therapy must have but they also learn medical facts including anatomy, pathology, physiology,
ethics, social interaction, adaptive capabilities, etc. since they will have to face many different types
of patients, in a wide variety of health conditions and in different private situations. It applies the several manual techniques
to reduce pain, normalize movement possibilities of the muscles and skeleton, and improve certain conditions. It involves
a deep knowledge of human physiology and advance continuing education.
We must know that instead of a general treatment
as in a regular massage therapy session, medical massage therapy is focused on a particular part of the body that needs to
be treated. It does not mean that whenever you decide that you want to benefit from a massage session, you would.
The therapist has knowledge of medical terminology
and other medical treatments that the patient is receiving. In fact, she is prepared to interact with other health care providers
and, of course, follow precise instructions from the primary doctor. A typical session may last between 45 to 60 minutes,
and unless otherwise prescribed by the physician, it is focused on a particular anatomic area of the patients’ body
which is in need of treatment. For each condition and for each particular patient, the therapist will choose the manual technique
or techniques that are most suitable for that particular situation. Not all medical massage therapy sessions are the same.
Self
care
*The
massage Therapist will show the client a variety of exercises that the client can do at home between visits. Doing the exercises
on a regular basis will help to improve the client’s condition.
Chair
Massage
* In a study published in the International Journal of Neuroscience, subjects were given
a 15 minute chair massage twice a week for 5 weeks. The results were compared against a control group and showed enhanced
alertness, greater speed and accuracy on math computations, reduced anxiety, lower cortisal levels, and lower job stress for
the massage group.
A
study published in the Journal of Applied Behavioral Science evaluated the effectiveness of an on-site chair massage therapy
program in reducing anxiety levels in 18 employees in an organization that was downsizing.
Results were compared against a control group and showed significant reductions in anxiety levels for the massage group.

FIJIAN MASSAGE
Fijian massage is an ancient art of barefoot massage from Fiji.
The therapist use their feet to apply deep neurmuscular-like strokes ot the entire body. Fijian massage is an effective deep-tissue
massage. It is great for those who participate in sports or have stressful lives with tight muscles. The therapist does
not walk on the body.
This type of masasge allows the therapist to utilize gravity-assisted
pressure, using their body weight, while their feet move effortlessly over the contours of the client's body to give a well-needed
deep tissue massage. The treatment is highly effective deep-tissue massage. The foot feels like a giant hand. Audrey
St. John, CMMP will be utilizing other techiniques from her culture in combination to this type of massage.
